Kandy Esala Perahera
"Temple of the Tooth" or Temple of the Tooth is located in Kandy. It is one of the most sacred places for Buddhists. The Sacred Tooth Relic of the Lord Buddha is placed in a golden casket.
There is an annual procession in the city. It is held in the month of August every year in honor of the Sacred Tooth Relic. This procession is considered to be the most important event in the country. It is a world famous show. Tourists come to Sri Lanka during this period to witness this spectacular procession. The Esala Perahera is a collection of five peraheras. That is
- Namely
- Natha
- Vishnu,
- Kataragama and Pattini.
They are also inside the palace premises. There are upcountry dancers, drummers, whippers and drummers in this procession. Kids carry flags and banners. Diyawadana Nilames will participate in this procession. They are followed by a large number of elephants. The elephant in the palace carries the Tooth Relic and walks through them. The festival lasts for several days. The las day is considered to be the most important day of the procession.
